A Japanese woman, viewed in profile, working on a hand loom in a factory

A black and white landscape photograph of a Japanese woman working with a hand loom, positioned between her and the camera. She is facing the camera and looking downwards towards where her hands, mostly obscured, are working with the machine or a piece of fabric. Her face is framed by vertical threads on the loom. She is wearing round glasses and a dark-coloured kimono, and her hair is tied up. To the right of the image, a bare lightbulb can also be seen hanging down from a looped flex. What may be other looms are visible in the background. Original captions (in ink above and below photograph, jointly with ALB0839.13): ‘KYOTO TEXTILE FACTORY, JAPAN’ (above), ‘AT WORK ON A HAND LOOM. IT TAKES ABOUT 6 MONTHS TO MAKE A 5 FOOT BY 3 LENGTH OF VERY FINE DESIGN.’ (below).
