A Japanese woman, viewed in profile, working on a hand loom in a factory

A black and white landscape portrait photograph showing a Japanese woman working with a hand loom. Her left side is facing the camera. She is seated and looking downwards towards her hands, which are working with a piece of fabric on a long flat surface that has weaving equipment arranged on it. She is wearing round glasses and a dark-coloured kimono, and her hair is tied up. The loom is visible to the left of the image, as well as a bare lightbulb on a looped flex. A man can be seen standing with his back to a closed window in the background. He is looking at an object, possibly a clipboard, held in his hand and he is dressed in some form of military uniform with stripes on his right shoulder. Original captions (in ink, to the right of the photograph, jointly with ALB0839.14): ‘KYOTO TEXTILE FACTORY, JAPAN’ and ‘AT WORK ON A HAND LOOM. IT TAKES ABOUT 6 MONTHS TO MAKE A 5 FOOT BY 3 LENGTH OF VERY FINE DESIGN.’.
