A Maldivian family

A black and white portrait photograph of a family in Maldives. All three face the camera. The man is dressed in a light-coloured, collarless shirt buttoned up to the neck and a sarong-like garment of checked material. The woman wears an ankle-length skirt with banded patterns at the hem with a slightly shorter dress over the top, which is plain apart from banded patterns round the neck and shoulders. She also has bangles on both her wrists. Both are barefoot and stand on bare earth. A child is sat on the woman’s left hip, holding her shoulder. He is wearing little or no clothing. To the right of the image is a wall or fence made of dried grass or other natural materials, with the branches of trees visible above. A fourth figure is just visible over the man’s right shoulder. Original caption (below in ink): ‘Family Group Malé’.
