Charminar, Char Kaman and Gulzar Houz in Hyderabad
A black and white landscape photograph facing south along Charminar Kaman Road in Hyderabad, probably taken from a roof. A shop-lined street, with flat rooftops to the right and left, can be seen running to a gateway (part of the Char Kaman), with four minarets behind (the Charminar). Both women and men can be seen walking along the street, along with horsedrawn carriages. Halfway between the camera and the arch is an octagonal fountain (Gulzar Houz). A building with onion domes can be seen to the right of the image ( the Makkah Masjid, also known as Mecca Musjid). Original caption (in pen beneath): 'Principal Street Hyderabad'.
Gulzar Houz was built by Mir Momin Astarabadi. There is still a fountain on this site but it was altered to a smaller, round structure in 2023.
Charminar means 'four minarets'.
The Makkah Masjid (or Mecca Musjid) is shown in ALB1783.11.
This photograph was probably taken by Lal Deen Dayal, a famous Indian photographer.
