'Queen Elizabeth'-class ships of the 5th Battle Squadron at the Battle of Jutland, 31 May 1916
Signed, partly in monogram, lower left, 'AD W SMITH'. The displayed image shows some varnish blanching in the sea. The previous title to this picture called it the 'First Battlecruiser Squadron' at Jutland, but the ships shown are not battlecruisers. (The vessels shown have a casemated secondary battery and the only battlecruiser with this feature was the 'Tiger', but she did not have a mainmast. ) They are in fact battleships, of which the only ones at Jutland that had casemated guns, a mainmast and a substantial bridge structure were the four 'Queen Elizabeth'-class ships of the 5th Battle Squadron. These followed astern of the battlecruisers in the later stages of the run to south, coming into action against the German battlecruisers at 16.08 and firing their last shots at 19.30. Here they are in line ahead, firing to starboard at the distant enemy battlecrisers on the horizon to viewer's left, while over-shooting German shells explode in the sea on the right. Wales-Smith (1888-1966, was a naval officer who retired before the Second World War, though returned to the Naval Ordnance Department during it as a Commander. In 1948 he emigrated to South Africa. The signature here suggests this is probably an inter-war work work, since 'Wales' was one of his forenames which he added to his surname as Wales-Smith after about 1945.
