Perforated marble screen and (empty) sarcophagus in the central chamber of the Taj Mahal
A black and white landscape photograph of the central chamber of the Taj Mahal. The camera is facing one of the two arches in the chamber’s octagonal perforated marble screen (jali). This screen surrounds the (empty) sarcophagus of Mumtaz Mahal, which can be seen through a second, smaller arch. It is placed on a platform with flower motifs around the base. Light can be seen coming through a latticed arched window behind the sarcophagus in the background. Original caption (below, in ink): ‘Tomb inside Taj Mahal’.
The sarcophagus in this chamber does not hold the remains Mumtaz Mahal, which are housed in a lower chamber along with those of Shah Jehan.
