Indian soldiers looking towards HMHS Llandovery Castle

A black and white landscape photograph showing thirteen Indian soldiers looking across water towards HMHS Llandovery Castle. They stand in three rows, each containing four men, with an additional man standing apart, towards the right of the image. Most of the men have their hands behind their back and are facing the ship; two men have turned their head to face the camera behind them. All the soldiers are wearing uniform, including boots, shorts, shirts with rolled-up sleeves and turbans. Each turban has a kulla (also khulla or kullah), a stiff central cone around which the fabric is wrapped. The men are stood inside a building with an opening facing the water, one side of which is just within shot. The ship’s starboard side, painted with a medical cross and ‘39’ is facing the camera. Parts of other vessels can be seen in the background. Original cation (typed, overlaid across the top of the photograph): ‘H.M.H.S. “LLANDOVERY CASTLE” 10,640 tons, at Alexandria with wounded Allied Prisoners of War after exchange with Italians.’
