Kobe Club
A black and white landscape photograph showing a colonial style two-storey building with triangular roofs and chimney turrets. The upper floor of the building features arches on the balcony with metal railings, while the ground floor mimics these arches and has a large light coloured arch over the doorway. To the right of the image and in front of the building, trees can be seen in what looks like a garden area. There is a short wall and a lamp post to the left of the building. Original caption in pen underneath the photograph: ‘Kobe Club.’
The Kobe Club was established in 1869 (moving to the building featured in 1890) as an English- speaking club for foreigners in Kobe, Hyogo, Western Japan. This building is located in what is now Higashi Yuenchi Park. The members only club featured a bar, purported to be the longest counter in Japan at the time, a dining room, library, card room, and conversation room, among others.
