A temporary triumphal arch at Madras
A black and white landscape photograph of a temporary triumphal arch erected in or near Madras [Chennai] for the Duke of Connaught's visit. The arch is made of painted fabric or wooden boards attached to a frame. It has 'RAJAH OF VENKATAGIRI' across the top and images of Hindu gods on the two sides, as well as various decorative patterns. The arch spans a road, along which Indian women, men and children can be seen walking, some in front of the arch, some beneath it and some beyond it. At least one Indian soldier is visible standing near the arch, holding a rifle. Rows of flags have been arranged around the arch and across the road. Some vegetation is visible on either side of the road and in the background. Original caption (handwritten in ink beneath): 'One of the Triumphal Arches, En route.'.
