Greenwich Observatory
This giclée print depicts a view of the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, including the Great Equatorial Telescope dome on the left and Flamsteed House on the right. In the foreground is the James Wolfe statue in Greenwich Park. The print is after one of two poster artworks that Eric Ravilious completed for London Transport in the mid-1930s, the other depicting Greenwich Pier (both now in the London Transport Museum). Neither image was ever used as a poster. In December 2006, The Maidstone Press published an edition of 500 prints after the Observatory artwork. This print is no. 66 of that edition and has an accompanying certificate of authenticity. As a record of Ravilious’s poster design, the print testifies to the emergence of Greenwich, and the Observatory in particular, as a tourist destination.
