Piper’s Wharf

This coloured etching depicts a footpath along a corrugated iron fence at Piper’s Wharf on the River Thames in East Greenwich. The foreshore slopes away on the right and cranes are visible in the distance. James R. Piper established a barge-building yard on this site in the late nineteenth-century, and Piper’s Wharf continued to produce Thames barges and sailing vessels until its closure in the mid-1980s. The area has since been redeveloped as part of the Enderby Wharf development. The title (‘Piper’s Wharf’), edition number (‘43/50’) and artist’s signature ('Elizabeth Morris') are inscribed beneath the image. Elizabeth Morris is a printmaker and founding member of Greenwich Printmakers.
