Shipping off Rotterdam
A view of Rotterdam showing the yacht of the Admiralty of the Maas and men-of-war. Remarkably little is known about either the subject matter of this painting, nor has the artist been positively identified. The yacht in the foreground belongs to the Admiralty of the Maas. The nature of the sea activity involved in the painting probably indicates an important arrival in Rotterdam. It is possible that the painting may record the arrival of King Charles II on 24 May 1660, though there is little firm evidence for this assertion.
