Details of the bow of vessel, seen in profile, with inscription, 'Pie Repone [ ] te / Aut Vincam aut Peribo' (continued from previous pages, PAE9593-PAE9594)

Bound with PAE9592-PAE9594, PAE9596-PAE9665.; Medium includes graphite.; Page 3.

The two mottoes on the trail boards of this ship translate as 'Repose in pious confidence' ('Repone te' being two words not one) and 'I will either win or perish'. The former is that of the Manvers family, the latter of the Chudley family, though their significance here remains to be confirmed (as does the identity of the crest). They may relate to ownership of the vessel, which is likely to be an Indiaman of some sort. [PvdM 2/12]
