Calm: Dutch Ships at Anchor in a Crowded Harbour

This painting serves as a contrast with BHC0987. The harbour, in a Dutch setting, is calm, implying the peace and stability denied the English shipping battling against a gale in BHC0987. Above the stern windows of the principal warship, seen in port-quarter view, is a coat of arms. The boats on the left are at anchor with small craft moving among them. The buildings of a port are visible in the distance, to the far left and centre. A barrel in the foreground bears the signature of the artist. A small craft on the right moves towards the large ship and appears to be conveying dignitaries, as well as a man standing up in the boat playing a trumpet, which introduces a ceremonial element. A small craft to the right also has a crest on the stern.
