Straits of Gibraltar
This watercolour probably dates from the early 1890s and is likely to have been made while Wyllie was on a cruise on board the Orient Line 'Garonne' in 1893. Because some of the crew and passengers died of yellow fever the cruise was extended to the Mediterranean as compensation, giving Wyllie the opportunity to paint this view looking across the Straits of Gibraltar towards the Atlas Mountains.
Although this is clearly a watercolour of exhibition quality, Wyllie often painted small watercolours which he then sold to fellow cruise passengers. It is signed and inscribed with the title in the lower left hand corner.
