A destroyer with an 'Indefatigable'-class battlecruiser and a zulu fishing boat, probably at Scapa Flow; and a study of shot fall
Two studies, one above the other, on the same sheet. Both may have been done at or near Scapa Flow, the coastline shown at the top being the same as one of the studies comprising PAF0695, both of which also include a destroyer in bow view, one during a firing exercise. The destrover here is only in the top drawing, with a battlecruiser of the 'Indefatigable' type more distant to the right. The rig is indicative of a 1916-17 date and she is probably either 'New Zealand' or 'Australia' as the 'Indefatigable' was sunk at Jutland on 31 May 1916. The red-sailed two-masted fishing vessel appears to have the raked stern of a Scottish east coast zulu, a hybrid type widespread from the 1880s. The lower drawing is a study of the three splashes of falling shot, presumably from gunnery practice.
