The German High Seas Fleet standing into the Forth to surrender, 21 November 1918
Inscribed and signed by the artist, lower right, 'Surrender. German / fleet standing in / W.L.Wyllie'. A distant line of five visible but undistinguishable ships across the horizon, the whole rendered in monochrome greenish wash (presumably to suggest the drizzly grey weather of the day). The view is from the north, with the ships moving left to right. If it is the head of the line the ship leading would be the British cruiser HMS 'Cardiff' followed by the larger German battlecruisers 'Seydlitz', 'Moltke', 'Hindenburg' and 'Derflinger'.Wyllie was present at the surrender and internment of the German fleet, as guest (for a month) of Admiral Sir Charles Madden on HMS 'Revenge', and this was no doubt painted as seen from her, in the escorting northern division of British ships of the Grand Fleet.
