The Battlecruiser Force running south at the Battle of Jutland, 31 May 1916, about 15.50

This drawing was reproduced as Wyllie's first image of the Battle of Jutland in his co-authored book 'More Sea Fights of the Great War' (1919) f. p. 114, with the caption 'Jutland: "Queen Mary", Princess Royal and "Lion" begin the Battle'. It represents the run to the south by the British Battlecruiser Force between 15.48 and 16.10 on 31 May 1916, seen from astern and to starboard. The 1st Battlecruiser Squadron is in the foreground with the 'Queen Mary' on the left, 'Princess Royal' in the centre and Admiral Beatty's flagship 'Lion' on the right, all in line ahead and firing to port. The small vessel in the centre distance is a light cruiser, either the 'Nottingham' or the 'Dublin', both of which were between the lines at this time. Shot splashes in the foreground are from the enemy out of sight to the left.
