The 'Defence' and 'Warrior' at the Battle of Jutland, 31 May 1916, about 19.20
A view from astern and to port, showing Rear-Admiral Arbuthnot in the armoured cruiser 'Defence' (ahead and left of centre) leading the armoured cruiser 'Warrior' (right of centre) into action against the German light cruiser 'Wiesbaden', and coming under fire of the German High Seas Fleet at about 19.20 on 31 May 1916. On the right, seen from ahead on an opposing course, is the Battlecruiser Force led by Beatty's 'Lion' with 'Princess Royal', 'Tiger' and 'New Zealand'. A very similar watercolour version of this view was reproduced in colour in Wyllie's co-authored book 'More Sea Fights of the Great War' (1919) f. p. 130 as the seventh in his sequence there in Jutland. The principal difference in the watercolour are details of shot fall and that 'Warrior' lacks the topmast shown here on her second (main) mast. Items PAF0916, PAF0917, PAF1878 and PAF2246 are alternative versions of the same event.
