Becton Gasworks
The jetty of the Gas, Light and Coke Company's Beckton Gasworks, seen from the Thames. This huge plant depended on regular supplies of coal carried on the river, and the removal of coke - a by-product of the gas production process. The jetty was specially designed to handle colliers, which discharged coal here, while others were loaded with coke. The gasworks closed in 1969 and lay derelict for many years. The area has now been redeveloped into housing.Wyllie also exhibited an oil painting of this subject.
