'A Sweep in the North Sea': the Grand Fleet at sea in a following wind

Signed by artist and inscribed, as title, lower left, this was reproduced under the same title in Wyllie's co-authored book 'More Sea Fights of the Great War' (1919), f. p. 30. The date shown is 1914-16 and the ship on the left is the battleship 'Agincourt'. She was originally laid down in 1911 for the Brazilian navy by Armstrong Whitworth at Newcastle, but Brazil sold her during construction to Turkey and she was nearly complete (as the 'Sultan Osman I') when war broke out in 1914. British fears that the Turks would ally with Germany (as they did) saw her seized and taken into the Navy as 'Agincourt'. She is shown here as completed for British service with her previous flying bridges removed. In 1916 the main tripod was reduced to a pole mast, which gives the approximate date represented. As designed, 'Agincourt' was the second of the Brazilian 'Minas Geraes'-class battleships (three being intended). The NMM collection includes a very fine model of 'Minaes Geraes' herself (SLR1387) showing how impressive they were, armed with a remarkable total of fourteen 12-inch guns.
