'The Hohenzollern at Kiel'
Inscribed, as title, and signed by the artist, lower left. The 'Hohenzollern' was Kaiser Wilhelm II's second imperial yacht of the name, launched by Aktiesgesellschaft Vulcan at Stettin on 27 June 1892 and broken up at Wilhelmshafen in 1923. She was reconstructed in 1907 but her external appearance was very little altered. The date of this depiction is probably June 1914 - or based on sketches done then - at the time of the Kaiser's opening of the Kiel Canal (23rd), an event that Wyllie attended on behalf of the 'Graphic' magazine. This watercolour was reproduced (in black and white) in his and M.F. Wren's 'Sea Fights of the Great War' (1918) f. p.12.
