Athens from the Gulf of Aegina
It is possible that this watercolour may be a study for the picture exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1931, 'Athens from the Gulf of Aegina'. This was one of the three pictures that Wyllie was finishing in London prior to exhibition at the Academy at Easter 1931 when he died suddenly. Writing of this picture in her memoir of her husband's life, 'We Were One' (1935), Mrs Wyllie states that the studies for it were made on a cruise to the Mediterranean the previous year. The watercolour shows Wyllie's looser handling of the medium in his later years.
