Three Chinese women in a wooden punishment collar
A black and white landscape photograph of three Chinese women in a hinged wooden punishment collar (often called ‘cangue’ by Europeans). The collar is rectangular and has three openings in a row, through which the women's heads protrude. The women stand in a row, their shoulders and elbows touching. Each wears some form of dress with an appron on top, as well as a cap or other headgear. Their shoes are visible beneath the hems of their skirts. They are standing with their bacs to a wall, with panelled doors or shutters visible on either side of the photograph. Original caption (handwritten in ink beneath): 'Chinese Prisoners'.
