Dog Child, a Blackfoot man, with tipis behind

A black and white portrait photograph of Dog Child, a Blackfoot man, standing on grass with tipis and horses in the backfround. He stands in the middle of the frame, his facing towards the right of the image. His right hand is by his side and his left hand is holding a fan-like object consisting of light-coloured feathers with dark tips attached to a handle. Hanging from his left wrist is a fabric draw-string bag. He wears a blanket round his waist, with trousers and moccasin visible beneath. He has a patterned scarf or similar garment around his neck, as well as some form of beaded necklace. A circular earring is visible in his right ear and his hair is tied in two plaits, one hanging down on each shoulder. Around ten tipis are visible in the background with at least four horses grazing around them. Behind the tipis rises a hillside, escarpment or some other form of sloping ground. Original captions: (within the photograph) '[cropped]- JACK BLACKFOOT INDIAN' and 'B.J. THOMPSON PHOTO [illegible]'; (handwritten in ink beneath): 'Klutchman (?) - West of Rockies'.

Dog Child, also known as 'Winnipeg Jack', acted as a scout and interpreter for the North-West Mounted Police.
