Four Muslim women on Galata Bridge in Constantinople [Istanbul]
A black and white landscape photograph showing four Muslim women on Galata Bridge, as well as surrounding streets. The four women are walking in a line. Three of them are wearing burkas (covering the whole body, including their faces, with no part visible except hands and feet). One woman, the second from the right of the image, is wearing a chador (a full-length cloak leaving her face visible); she may be smiling or squinting. Other pedestrians can be seen behind them, including a boy in a fez looking to the left of the image, and on the other side of the bridge. Two ornate lampposts with striped pillars are visible on either side of the women. Various buildings can be seen in the background. Original caption (handwritten in ink beneath): ‘Native women with Yackmacks [Yasmaks] – Galat[a] Bridge’
