A Trinidadian man harvesting bitumen with a pickaxe

A black and white landscape photograph showing a Trinidadian man harvesting pitch. The man, who is Black, stands in a depression in the ground. He is facing the camera but looking down. He holds a pickaxe in both hands, the image of which is blurred (probably by movement). He wears trousers, a shirt and a hat the partially obscured his face. Baskets filled with bitumen and piles of bitumen sourround him. Behind him, slightly higher and towards the right of the image, is a mining cart on rails. Behind this, on the far right of the photograph, can be seen four men in white uniforms and caps, possibly naval officers, standing with their backs to the camera. A line of trees can be seen in the background. The shadow of at least one person, possibly the photographer, can be seen cast onto the foreground. Original caption (handwritten beaneath in ink): 'Cutting pitch. Brighton, Trinidad'.
