Second Battle of the Heligoland Bight, 17 November 1917
This fluent watercolour bears the inscription in the lower left-hand corner 'Nov 17 1917', but was possibly not written by Wyllie. However, it may indicate that the action depicted between British and German ships is the one that took place on that date when three British light cruisers in the Heligoland Bight engaged German minesweepers, of which one was sunk. Two German battleships came up in support but retreated when British battlecruisers appeared and engaged. This is an example of Wyllie working 'in the wet'. He worked on wet paper attached to a pinboard and frame, the holes of which are here visible along the lower edge of the paper. The ships depicted are two light cruisers of the 6th Light Cruiser Squadron which comprised the 'Calypso', 'Caradoc', 'Ceres' and 'Cardiff'. The destroyer in the foreground is the 'Vanquisher', launched 18 August 1917 and completed on 2 October. She wore the pendant number F3A from completion until January 1918.
