Signed by artist and inscribed below, as title, lower right, this drawing was reproduced in colour in Wyllie and M.F. Wren's 'Sea Fights of the Great War (1918) f. p. 142. The title is fictitious, however, since there has never been a submarine 'E567', the E-class running from E1 to E56 only, and in the book (despite the inscribed and legible title) the printed caption is 'A Submarine Taking a Rest'. Here the main hull details shown are good for the E-class (comparing with the ship plans in the NMM collection) but the aft casing above the pressure hull did not have a rearward slope to it. The submarine 'D5' did have a rearward sloping casing but not the stern tube arrangement shown here, where the boat appears to be an amalgam of the two classes, not specifically identifiable and, perhaps, imaginary. (The Wyllie drawing which is now PAE3406 is titled 'E5 in dock' and is drawn from an almost identical viewpoint, although there surrounded by people. Moreover, Wyllie's inscription to bottom right there may originally have been 'D5' changed to 'E5' - which at least suggests what the present drawing is based on.) Underwater views are always unusual, but Wyllie had some interest in them, most notably connected with his earlier painting 'Davy Jones's Locker', also in the NMM collection.
