'HMS New Zealand off Hoy'
Inscribed in pencil by the artist, lower right, as title, this drawing shows the battlecruiser 'New Zealand' (1911) in bow view during firing practice, out of Scapa Flow, after her 1917 modifications (HA rangefinder fitted on top of the fore control top and fore-topmast removed). In her December 1918 - February 1919 refit the fore-topmast was reinstated. An Admiralty M- or R-class destroyer is to port under what is probably the west side of the island of Hoy, Orkney, assuming that 'New Zealand' is firing her guns towards the open sea.
