Studies of a monitor ('M24', 'M25' or 'M26')
Five separate studies, two of the complete ship and three of details, but all of the same craft - a 7.5-inch-gunned monitor built by Sir Raylton Dixon at Middlesbrough, on the River Tees. There were three of these ships, 'M24', 'M25' and 'M26', all launched in 1915, and they all served at Dover from completion. In the spring of 1916 they were each re-armed with a single 7.5-inch gun. When Britain became involved in the post-Revolutionary Russian civil war, all three were transferred to the White Russian area of operations from August 1918 until September 1919. 'M25' was blown up in the Dvina River on 16 September 1919 to prevent it falling into Bolshevik hands. 'M24' and 'M26' were sold in 1920. These sketches probably show one of the ships in mid-1918 prior to dispatch to the White Sea.
