Emigrants, New York
Invited by Sir Thomas Ismay, chairman of the White Star Line, Wyllie, his wife and son, Harold, sailed from Liverpool to New York on board the liner 'Majestic' on her maiden voyage in April 1890.
This is one of a set of drawings Wyllie produced for reproduction in the 'Graphic' newspaper. The 'Graphic' was founded in December 1869 by William Luson Thomas, a wood engraver who believed that illustrations had the power to influence public opinion on political issues. Among the other artists employed to produce illustrations for the newspaper were Luke Fildes, Hubert von Herkomer, John Millais and Frank Holl.
