Study for 'The "Gloucester hulk" at Chatham'
This study shows the old 'wooden-wall' 'Gloucester' in bow view moored alongside the Anchor Wharf storehouses at Chatham Dockyard, on the Medway. With a related view (PAF2025) it is the basis of the more developed and large oil painting of the subject now in the Royal Naval Museum, Portsmouth. 'Gloucester' was built as a third-rate, 74-gun ship in 1812 but cut doen to a fourth-rate of 50 guns in 1831. As shown here she was serving as a receiving ship at Chatham from 1861 to 1884, when she was sold for breaking up. [PvdM 6/13]
