A launch (?) at Portsmouth
A rapid sketch made during what may be a launch or some other occasion at Portsmouth Dockyard requiring ships to be dressed overall, probably in the first decade of the 20th century, although it is not clear whether the drawing dates from after the Wyllies' move to Portsmouth in 1906. It demonstrates Wyllie's ability to capture the moment with considerable economy, including the effect of looking into the light. The viewpoint is looking south towards the entrance to Portsmouth harbour with 'Victory' visible in the right distance. The single masted vessel dressed overall on the right is one of the armoured cruisers 'Imperieuse' (1883) or 'Warspite' (1884). The latter was broken up in 1905, when the former was renamed 'Sapphire II' as a depot ship before reverting to 'Imperieuse' in June 1909 and being broken up in 1913.
