A sunny naval anchorage, with six 'King Edward VII'-class battleships and other shipping
Signed by the artist, lower right, this fine finished watercolour appears to show six of the 'King Edward VII' class battleships (all members of the class of eight comprising the 3rd Battle Squadron) in the period 1915-16 with torpedo nets, but with both topgallants and their main topmasts removed. There is insufficient detail to be able to identify any of the individual ships, though the class was known as the 'Wobbly Eight' from their tendency to roll when under way at speed. The location is also indeterminate. The squadron was based at Rosyth until the end of April 1916, but one world expect Wyllie to have included the Forth Bridge if that is the location. It then moved to Sheerness but, again, there are no characteristic Thames barges included, though the small coastal steamers coming out in ballast appear in other Wyllie drawings of the Thames and Medway (see for example PAF1829)
