'Oban'
This grey wash drawing may date from a visit to the west coast of Scotland in 1889 when Wyllie and his wife went to inspect and sail their new boat, the 'Grey Mare', just completed at Rosneath on the Clyde, although it might date from a later visit. Wyllie was particularly skilled in making monochrome drawings; at this time he had been producing black and white illustrations for the 'Graphic' for about twenty years, and it is likely that this discipline may have contributed to his skill as a printmaker in etching and drypoint. This drawing may have been intended as a design for one of these, especially as the effect of looking into the light reflected in the water was something that particularly interested Wyllie as a printmaker.
