HMS 'Warrior' and 'Warspite' at the Battle of Jutland, 31 May 1916, about 18.25
Signed by artist in the lower left margin. On the left in this etching - for which PAF2214 appears to be a close preliminary drawing - is the battleship 'Warspite', in action at the Battle of Jutland, at about 18.25 on 31 May 1916. She is under fire from five German battleships while the badly damaged armoured cruiser 'Warrior', on the right, tries to withdraw to the westward. An impression of this plate was reproduced as a half-tone illustration in Wyllie's co-authored book 'More Sea Fights of the Great War' (1919), f. p. 132 as the eighth in his sequence there on Jutland. Wyllie appears to have exhibited an oil version at the Royal Academy in 1917 under the title 'Jutland, 31st May, 1916: HM Ships "Warspite" and Warrior" '.
