The Pool
An etching of the Upper Pool by marine artist William Lionel Wyllie (1851-1931). Wyllie emphasises the wharves on the north (City) bank of the Thames, with Tower Bridge - its bascules raised to allow shipping to pass - visible through the haze in the distance. In the foreground, stevedores are busy discharging cargo from a lighter. In the lower left margin it is inscribed, ‘Early state worked up in wash’. For another version, see PAF0707.
