Windy Corner, Jutland 2. Trial proof
This trial proof etching is of the Battle of Jutland on 31 May 1916, apparently showing the British position at 18.30. Admiral John Jellicoe's fleet flagship 'Iron Duke' is in the centre, seen in broad port-quarter view, with the destroyer 'Oak' (pendant no. 38), keeping station on her disengaged side. The 'Iron Duke' opened fire at 18.30 and maintained it for about five minutes before her target - the German fleet being on the horizon - was hidden by smoke. She fired again between 19.13 and 19.18 and loosed off one more salvo at 19.27. Why it has the title 'Windy Corner, Jutland 2. Trial proof' remains to be checked, but it may be so inscribed. ' Windy Corner' itself is more a time in the action than an identifiable place, save by latitude and longitude: the name came from the rapid mass redeployment of the smaller ships of the British fleet as Jellicoe manoeuvred to 'cross Sheer's T' to the west, putting the broadsides of his battleships in the best position to concentrate their fire on Scheer's line ahead, with the sinking sun in British favour on the evening of 31 May 1916.
