Chinese Junks, 1850
This painting of a Chinese junk off a mountainous coastline displays the vessel for its own sake without any reference to an historic event. Its 'exotic' build and appearance, enhanced by the colourful painterly style, would have appealed to 19th-century audiences all over Europe. Although no available documentary evidence confirms it, this portrait has been attributed to Chinnery, who worked in China for much of his later life.
