Inigo Jones, 1573 - 1652 (Celeberrimus vir Inigo Jones Praefectus Architecturae Magnae Brittaniae Regis Etc)

Print. Van Voerst's well-known image from Van Dyck's published 'Iconographiae' (1641), or 'book of heads'. It is etched, in reverse, from the original chalk drawing (9.5 x 7.75 ins) in the Duke of Devonshire's collection at Chatsworth. The drawing was in possession of a late-17th-century Dutch collector until acquired by the 2nd Duke of Devonshire who gave it to the 3rd Earl of Burlington. It returned to the Devonshire collection by descent from Burlington's widow to her grandson, the 5th Duke, with much else by Jones, primarily masque designs. It is reproduced inter alia in Roy Strong's 'Festival designs by Inigo Jones' (frontis.) exh. cat. (V&A 1969). The van Voerst print is the prime source for Rysbrack's original marble bust of Jones, made for Burlington about 1725 and now also at Chatsworth through the same provenance. It was also the source for Hogarth's fine oil portrait of Jones commissioned by Sir Edward Littleton for Teddesley Hall, Staffs, in the 1750s (now NMM BHC2810). [PvdM 2/05]
