'Mr. Daniel De Foe Author of the True born Englishman'
Portrait of Daniel Defoe engraved in 1706 by Michiel van der Gucht (or Michael Vandergucht as he was known in England where he worked for most of his life) after Taverner's portrait. This is apparently the version used as frontispiece to the first edition of Defoe's 'History of the Union of Great Britain'. Another that may be the earlier one (copy in the British Museum) bears only a Latin inscription reading 'Laudatur et Alget / Juven[al]. Sat[ire]. I'. There is an entirely different print also signed by van der Gucht and reported as also after Taverner - an obscure artist by whom only a few portrait images are known - showing the sitter fuller-faced in a different style of wig, and with the head and torso practically facing in different directions (see PAD2737): that one was reportedly published in July 1703. Both were subsequently copied by later engravers. Defoe usually signed himself as 'De Foe' and most early prints of him are titled that way. [PvdM 5/23]
