The Right Honble Sir George Byng: one of the Lords Comissioners of the Admiralty, and Commander in Chief of his Majities Fleet
A three-quarter-length portrait of George Byng (1663–1733) in a long wig and metal breastplate, holding his sword in his left hand and resting his right arm on a stone plinth beside a baton of command. He stands in front of a tree on the left and a naval engagement on the right. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘The Right Honble. Sir George Byng Bart. one of the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty and Commander in Chief of his Majties Fleet.’ Also lettered with the production details: ‘G. Kneller S. R. I. & Mag. Brit: Bar Pinxit. / J. Faber Fecit & Excudt. 1718.’ This portrait was engraved and published by John Faber the Younger in 1718 after Godfrey Kneller’s oil painting of 1707–9, which is now in the National Maritime Museum (see BHC2589). The plate was subsequently reworked as a portrait of Edward Vernon (see PAF3395). Admiral Sir George Byng was one of the Lord Commissioners of the Admiralty and Commander-in-Chief of his Majesty's fleet. He won a great victory over the Spanish fleet off Cape Passaro in 1719. Byng was Master of Trinity House in 1711–13. (Updated May 2019.)
