Sr Charles Wager Vice Admiral of Great Britain
State before letters. A three-quarter-length portrait to left of Sir Charles Wager (1666–1743) wearing a long wig and a plain coat over a metal breastplate. He holds the hilt of his sword in his left hand and a baton of command in his right. There is a cliff behind him on the left and a naval engagement on the right. Manuscript inscription in pen and ink beneath the image: ‘Sr. Charles Wager Vice Admiral of Great Britain.’ This portrait was engraved by John Faber the Younger after an oil painting by Isaac Whood. The print was published by Faber around 1741 (see PAF3358) and by Robert Sayer (see PAF3700). (Updated May 2019.)
