Text in Latin below image. It translates as 'Peter Monamy, painter of shipping and marine views; second only to van de Velde'. The artist of the original oil (in a private collection) is Thomas Stubly (or Stubley) who may have been the 'Thos. Stubly', son of James and Mary, born 15 January 1686, at Swineshead in Lincolnshire/ Yorkshire. Five daughters born to a 'Thomas and Mary Stubley' were baptized in London between 1713 and 1723, the first two in St Paul's, Covent Garden, and at least two of the others including the last at St Andrew, Holborn.
