Sr Chaloner Ogle Kt. Rear Admiral of ye Blue
A three-quarter-length portrait of Chaloner Ogle (1681–1750) in a wig and frock coat. Ogle holds a baton of command in his right hand, standing in front of trees (on the right) and a ship (on the left). Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘Sr. Chaloner Ogle Kt. Rear Admiral of ye Blue.’, and the production details, ‘G. Hansson pinx. / V. Verdlen fecit.’ This print was probably produced between 1739 and 1742, since the inscription refers to the sitter as rear-admiral of the blue, which was his rank between July 1739 and March 1742. The publication of the print may have been associated with his capture of Cartagena in March 1741, which prompted the publication of a number of celebratory portrait prints (see, for example, PAF3381 and PAF3383).
