The Honble Edward Boscawen One of the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty and Rear Admiral of the White Squadron of His Majesty's Fleet

A three-quarter-length portrait of Edward Boscawen (1711–1761) in a waistcoat embellished with braid, a coat and a wig, with his hat under his arm. He holds a telescope in his right hand and rests his left hand on a cannon. He is framed on the right by a view of turreted buildings and on the left by a naval engagement. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘The Honble. Edward Boscawen One of the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty and Rear Admiral of the White Squadron of His Majestys Fleet.’ Also lettered with the production details and publication line, ‘R. Purcell Delin et Fecit. / London. Printed for John Ryall at Hogarth’s Head in Fleet Street.’ This print was engraved by Richard Purcell in the 1750s after John Faber the Younger’s mezzotint of 1747 (see PAF3406), which was itself after an oil painting by the Scottish artist Allan Ramsay (currently untraced). Purcell altered the details of Faber’s image, adding the cannon and telescope in the foreground in place of a plinth and a rolled chart respectively. He also introduced the turreted buildings in the background. The inscription refers to Boscawen’s appointment in 1751 as one of the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty and describes him as rear-admiral of the white, which was his rank from May 1748 until February 1755.
