A Hull sailing trawler (H964)
Ship portrait. Oil painting of the ketch-rigged Hull sailing trawler H964, under full sail in port broadside view, with a coastline beyond - presumably the English east coast. Similar vessels are inshore to the left and a full-rigged ship in distant stern view to seaward on the right. The trawler's mainsail and gunwale bear the port registry number (H964). The painting is one of a pair, the other (BHC1265) being of the Hull steam trawler 'Spider' (port registry no. H57), both acquired in 1974. For some reason they were wrongly listed until February 2013 as Harwich vessels (for which the port registry letters would be 'HH'). Nothing else is known of the artist, who is presumed to be a local 'pierhead painter' specializing in this type of work, of which they are attractive and competent examples. Both are signed 'G. Ramsey' and dated 1889 in red, lower left.
