The Hull steam trawler 'Spider'

Ship portrait. Oil painting of the steam trawler 'Spider', port registry number H57, shown at sea in starboard broadside view. Other shipping appears beyond, with distant land on the far left. The painting is one of a pair, the other (BHC1264) being of an unnamed Hull sailing trawler with the port registry number H694, both acquired in 1974. For some reason they were wrongly listed until February 2013 as Harwich vessels (for which the port registry letters would be 'HH'). Nothing else is known of the artist, who is presumed to be a local 'pierhead painter' specializing in this type of work, of which they are attractive and competent examples. Both are signed 'G. Ramsey' and dated 1889 in red, lower left.
