Lettered beneath the image with the title: ‘George Keppel Earl of Albemarle, Viscount Bury, Baron Ashford, One of his Majesty’s most Honourable Privy Council. Governor of the Island of Jersey. Lt. Gen. of his Majesy’s Forces. Colonel of the King’s own Regiment of Dragoons & Commander in Chief of the Expedition against ye Havannah.’ Also lettered with the production details and publication line: ‘J. Reynolds Pinxt. / Edw. Fisher fecit / Printed for E. Bakewell & H. Parker, Print Sellers, opposite Birchin Lane, in Cornhill, & E. Fisher at the Golden Head, south side of Leicester Square.’ This portrait was engraved by Edward Fisher in 1762 after an original painting by Joshua Reynolds, possibly painted around 1754. The current location of Reynolds’s painting is unknown. Francis Cotes produced a pastel version of this portrait, which is signed and dated 1755. George Keppel was a successful military officer, who became third Earl of Albemarle in 1754. The caption on this print refers to his role as commander-in-chief of the land forces at the capture of Havana in 1762, where he served alongside his younger brothers Augustus, second-in-command of the naval forces, and William, a major-general in the army. Albemarle organised a successful landing on 7 June 1762 and forced Havana’s surrender on 12 August, although he lost a large number of men to disease. (Updated April 2019.)
